Artist's Comments

I originally went out to shoot Pine Mountain yesterday near Saint George, Utah because they just got a fresh blanket of snow a couple nights ago, but as I was hiking to this location I found many "burnt" tree's, I'm guessing from a forest fire caused by lightning. Either way, it made for some very interesting pictures.

The lighting here is lovely. I also love combination of warm and cool colours. I find it interesting how you composed with mostly cropping the tops of the trees out of the image. It's really neat, gives an entirely different feeling to the image focusing mainly on the light and grasses. The softness of the grasses also make for an interesting contrast to the blunt twisted dark branches. The branches give a somewhat "creepy" feel to the image, but the golden light contradicts their creepiness, haha. A really unique landscape image, I love it. Nicely done Michael. :)

Very kind of you Alyssa! Trunk shots are so tricky, and like I was discussing with Nzeman, Thomas Mangelsen is the king of them. This particular spot was pretty good because of the contrast of the tree's and 'weeds' like you said. I was going for a creepy feel with this picture because of the trees, but the warm light and textures really balance this piece out! haha. I'll take what nature produces. Late in the day here really does make everything glow, I don't know if it's this time of year or what, but I love it.
